Tech Insight Plus! – Episode 9

So this week we actually had some news items left after we put together the show. However, they were ALL Apple related news. I suppose this isn’t a surprise with the iPad launch, iPhone OS 4.0 and rumours of a new iPhone (HD?).  So I apologize in advanced for the over coverage of the ongoing Apple News Saga, and I’ll try and keep it brief.

What 3G user’s don’t get from 4.0

When Mr. Jobs announced iPhone OS 4.0, it was noted that “some features” would be unavailable on the 3G model. Gizmodo got their hands on iPhone OS 4.0 and went through the extensive list of new features to see what was lacking on the 3G. Luckily for me,  a current 3G user, there are only 2 features I’ll be missing out on. Multitasking, the most exciting of the new features, will NOT be available on the iPhone 3G. Personally, I can understand leaving that out. The 3GS has a significantly more powerful hardware than the 3G. Apple aims to make their user experience as seamless as possible; therefore it makes sense that if the hardware isn’t quite up to full on multitasking, then don’t force it.

The second feature missing is wallpapers. That is ridiculous. Jailbreak has allowed the use of custom wallpapers since day one. I’ve had my phone jailbroken and used backgrounds extensively. There is no performance decrease, I refuse to accept hardware as the reason for excluding this feature. Whether or not people want to use backgrounds, who knows, but leaving this feature out for 3G users seems arbitrary. I’m sure it will enrage more than a few users.

iPhone update in June, According to SaskTel

I chose to include this because its the first time I’ve seen a Canadian telecom show up in almost all of the big tech blogs. Essentially, Robert Watson, CEO of SaskTel, expressed excitement about Apple coming out with a new iPhone in June, which is when SaskTel will be launching their new 3G (HSPA) network. There has since been clarification from SaskTel saying that the CEO was commenting on the internet rumours and has not been in talks with Apple. I think its entertaining to see much of the tech reporting world immediately jump on what some Canadian CEO said, when he was just commenting on their own rumour reports! Although it is nice to see a Canadian company name in the feeds every now and again. Its also good news, because everyone in Saskatchewan can look forward to getting an iPhone (who knows what version) starting in July!
