Our show can only be so long every week. We don’t want to bore you all to death by covering everything that happened every single week. We go through and pick what we feel are the most important and/or most interesting stories each week for our segments. (Off the Press, Tech Insight, etc) However, starting this week with Tech Insight, I’m going to be doing a somewhat concise blog post detailing all the stories we wanted to cover, but couldn’t due to time restrictions! So without further ado, here’s the first edition of Tech Insight Plus!
Toshiba Steps Up to the Plate… or should I say Platter
Toshiba announced this week that it would be upping the capacity of its laptop hard drive line. At the 9.5 mm size, there newest drives will max out at a capacity of 750 Gb and at the 12.5 mm size will top that at 1 TB. That’s a big increase from what we’ve seen traditionally at these sizes. I think it is a big start in pushing users away from the desktop computing model. Personally, I find I don’t use my laptop as much because of 2 reasons: screen size and hard drive capacity. If I could get a 1 TB drive in my laptop, it would take one big advantage away from the desktop…if the price was right.
These drives will also be making use of the somewhat new larger sector size. Sectors, in terms of magnetic disc storage, are essentially a unit to breakdown a single track around a platter on a hard drive. The current standard sector size is 512 bytes. However, these new drives will have sectors 4096 bytes in size. This will allow for better error correction and data recovery while allowing faster data access. It will also allow you to use more of the non-data space on your hard drive. (ie You buy a 120 GB drive and you can only use 111 GB)
All in all, nice to see Toshiba continuing to develop magnetic storage technology with solid state storage breaking into the market.

Rogers Is Pushed to Keep Tethering Around
Rogers (and Fido) announced this week past that tethering is here to stay! All customers with a 1 GB or higher data plan may continue to use tethering indefinitely. This is not a surprising move at all; especially considering Telus, Bell and Wind Mobile have stated from the get go that tethering is included with their data plans. However, for all us Rogers/Fido customers it is nice to know that we don’t have to worry about losing such a basic service.

That’s all for this weeks Tech Insight Plus! Look here in the coming weeks to find a similar break down of tech news stories that didn’t make their way into our show.
Cheers,
